One of the most influential survival games in my experience was “Just Survive,” an early access spinoff from the infamous H1Z1. This is a survival MMO where you can use your creativity building bases with your friends or alone to stay alive and keep the zombie hoards out. The game featured both PVP and PVE environments, so there was something for everyone! I, of course with my competitive nature, dove into PVP right away, and quite honestly loved everything the game had to offer.
There was a multitude of weapons, different types of zombies, pretty much fully customizable bases you can make in a multitude of places on the map, with varying building material types with varying defensive qualities. Plus, there were vehicles you can find to roam around quickly, and traps you can place for any unsuspecting players out there.
Even though there were many great things about this game, there was a maximum of 2000 players each month playing the game form March-August 2018 (my girlfriend and I included), which ultimately helped Daybreak, the game’s creator, in the decision to no longer keep the servers running, and announced the last day the servers will be available as October 24, 2018.
“After careful consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to sunset Just Survive on Wednesday, October 24 at 11 a.m. PT. The excitement of the game’s promise was palpable and its loyal community is still full of ideas for its future. Unfortunately, we are no longer in a position to fulfill its greatness and the current population of the game makes it untenable to maintain“
However, there was a huge uproar from the community about this….even though there were a maximum of 2000 players playing every month, oftentimes gamers would have “binges In which they play nonstop for days/weeks at a time, and then not play for 1-2-3 months at a time. Just survive had a following of much larger than 2000 players, that’s for sure.
That being said, there is hope for all of us survivors out there. NantG, (part of NantWorks) has invested in Daybreak Game Company and is currently working on getting Just survive back online for us supporters! The story behind this partnership is too complex to write here, but you can watch this video to learn more about this:
A little over a month post server shutdown, there was news that the details between Daybreak and NantWorks are being worked out, and intellectual properties are being transferred. The H1Z1 team hasn’t forgotten about the Just Survive community, it just needs time to coordinate these discussions and negotiations.
Currently, negotiations are still underway (3 months later??!?), but there was a rumor going around the Just Survive community that there was an insider claiming we will hear more concrete news about JS near the end of February / beginning of March:
Even though this is a rumor, it still gives me excitement and makes me look forward to a day I can once again try to not “Just Survive,” but thrive. The beginning of the end is near, once again! Hang in there, Survivors!
